Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: peri- prefix, Greek στόμα, Latin -ium.
Etymology: < peri- prefix + ancient Greek στόμα mouth (see stoma n.) + classical Latin -ium (see -y suffix4). In sense 1 after scientific Latin peristomium (F. Ehrhart Beiträge zur Naturkunde (1787) I. 17; < peristoma peristome n. + -ium (see -y suffix4, after post-classical Latin pericarpium pericarpium n.2, etc.). Compare earlier peristoma n., peristome n.Compare Hellenistic Greek περιστόμιον mouth of a vessel, etc., use as noun of περιστόμιος, adjective, round a mouth or aperture.
