Etymology: < Anglo-Norman peiage, paiage, paage and Middle French peage (1165 in Old French; earlier as paage (c1150); French péage ) < an unattested Old French derivative of post-classical Latin pedaticum toll (10th cent.) < classical Latin ped- , pēs foot (see -ped comb. form) + post-classical Latin -aticum -age suffix. Compare post-classical Latin pedagium (11th cent.; frequently c1128–1485 in British sources), peagium , paagium (from late 12th or 13th cent. in British and continental sources; < French), Old Occitan peatge , pezatge , Italian pedaggio (c1300). Compare earlier pedage n. and slightly later podage n.
Obsolete.
A toll paid for passing through a place or country; = pedage n.
