Etymology: < the name of Wolfgang Paul (1913–93), German nuclear physicist who devised the trap (described by W. Paul and H. Steinwedel 1953, in Zeitschr. f. Naturforsch. 8 A. 448/1).
Physics.
attributive. Designating an ion trap in which a specially shaped radio-frequency electric field is used to confine ions or other charged particles. Esp. in Paul trap, Paul ion trap.
