Etymology: < Anglo-Norman pance (1418–43 or earlier) and Middle French panc (1330), pans (1338) armour for the lower part of the body (French †pance denoting a kind of doublet (1611 in Cotgrave)), probably a transferred use of pance paunch n.1 Compare also pauncher n.
Obsolete.
1. In the 14th and 15th centuries: a piece of armour made from plate or mail protecting the lower part of the body, esp. the abdomen.
