Origin: Formed within English, by derivation. Etymons: pave v., -age suffix.
Etymology: < pave v. + -age suffix; in sense 2 after Anglo-Norman and Middle French pavage toll for paving streets (1324–5 or earlier in Anglo-Norman: see below). With sense 1a compare earlier pavement n. With sense 1b compare Middle French, French pavage act of paving, paver's work (1354) and also earlier paving n. Compare post-classical Latin pavagium toll for paving streets (12th cent.; frequently 1223–1476 in British sources), paving, pavement (from 1339 in British sources; also 1382, 1430 as paviagium), Old Occitan pavatge toll for paving streets (1339).For Anglo-Norman pavage in sense 2 compare:1324–5 Rolls of Parl.
