Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pavane.
Etymology: < Middle French pavane grave and stately dance (although this is first attested later: 1529 as pavenne , 1530 as pavanne , 1538 as pavane ; French pavane ), music for this dance (1586) < Italian pavana rustic dance from the region of Padua (1508), music for this dance (a1556), probably < Italian regional (Padua, Venice) pavana , feminine form corresponding to pavan of or relating to Padua < Pava , regional form (with syncope of the medial syllable) of the name of Padova (see Paduan n. and adj.): see further Französisches etymol. Wörterbuch at Patavia. Compare Spanish pavana grave and stately dance (a1520: see note below).Spanish pavana is < Italian, but was reanalysed at an early date as if < pavón peacock (see pawn n.2), the dance being taken to be named after the similarity of its movements to those of a peacock (this has previously been taken by many to be the etymology of the word, but is now generally rejected). N.E.D. (1904) gives only the pronunciation (pæ·văn) /ˈpævən/, under the headword form pavan.
