Etymology: < pectini- comb. form + -branch comb. form, after French pectinibranche (1817 in Cuvier as noun, 1866 or earlier as adjective in the source translated in quot. 1868 for pectinibranchial adj. at pectini- comb. form ). Compare scientific Latin Pectinibranchia (attributed to G. A. Goldfuss by A. Férussac Animaux mollusques (1819) I. p. xxxiv). With the adjective compare earlier pectinibranchial adj. at pectini- comb. form , pectinibranchiate adj., pectinibranchous adj. at pectini- comb. form , and pectinibranchian n. and adj. at pectini- comb. form . Relating to, characterized by, or designating a type of gill structure found in mesogastropod and neogastropod molluscs, in which parallel filaments are borne along one side of the gill axis; (of a gill) monopectinate. Also: of or relating to a subclass or order Pectinibranchia in which these molluscs are placed in some classifications. Cf. pectinibranchiate adj. and n.
