Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with an English element. Etymons: Greek πηκτός , -ize suffix.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πηκτός fixed, congealed (see pectic adj.) + -ize suffix. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pe·ktəiz) /ˈpɛktaɪz/.
Chemistry and Biochemistry. Now rare.
transitive. To convert into a gelatinous mass; to congeal. Also intransitive with reflexive meaning.
