Etymology: < classical Latin pedetentim, variant (in post-classical manuscripts) of pedetemptim step by step, cautiously ( < pede , ablative of pēs foot (see -ped comb. form) + temptāre (also tentāre ) tempt v. + -im, suffix forming adverbs; compare classical Latin pede temptāre to test (a cold river) with the foot (Cicero)) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pedĭte·ntəs) /pɛdɪˈtɛntəs/.
Obsolete. rare.
