Origin: A borrowing from Latin, combined with an English element; modelled on a German lexical item. Etymons: Latin pāvōn- , pāvō , -ated suffix.
Etymology: < classical Latin pāvōn-, pāvō peacock (see pawn n.2) + -ated suffix, after German pfauenschweifig, literally ‘peacock-tailed’ (1798 in the passage translated in quot. 1798). N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (pæ·vŏneitėd) /ˈpavəneɪtɪd/.
Mineralogy. Obsolete. rare.
Characterized by an iridescent tarnish (cf. pavonine adj. 1).
