Etymology: < post-classical Latin paxillaris (c1255 in os paxillare sphenoid bone), alteration of basillaris basilary adj., after classical Latin paxillus (see paxillus n.).Compare also Middle English paxillus, denoting this bone:a1500 MS Add. 10440 in R. V. Fleischhacker Lanfrank's Sci. Cirurgie (1894) 110 & he is vnterberynge in þe hynder partie al þe bones of þe heued, & þerfore he is clepid þe..paxillus.
