Origin: Of uncertain origin. Perhaps a borrowing from Spanish. Or perhaps a borrowing from Portuguese. Etymons: Spanish pegajoso; Portuguese pegajoso.

Etymology: Origin uncertain; perhaps either < Spanish pegajoso sticky (1490; < pegar to cover in pitch, glue (see pay v.²) + -oso -ous suffix), or < Portuguese pegajoso (1588; < Spanish), or perhaps derived < Spanish pegar in some other way.

A dark, loose, peaty, acidic soil formed by decomposition of plant material and found chiefly in parts of Guyana. Frequently attributive.
