Etymology: < French peignoir negligée (1552 in Middle French), bathrobe (1805), light dressing gown (1827 or earlier; 1401 in Middle French as pignouer in sense ‘box for hairdressing instruments’, 15th cent. as peignouer in sense ‘undergarment put on the shoulders while combing one's hair’) < peigner to comb (second half of the 12th cent. in Old French as peignier ; < classical Latin pectināre pectinate v.) + French -oir (see -ory suffix¹). N.E.D. (1904) gives the non-naturalized pronunciation (pęn^ywār) /pɛɲwar/.
