Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pentagynia.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pentagynia, order name (Linnaeus Systema Naturæ (1735)) < ancient Greek πεντα- penta- comb. form + γυνή (see -gynous comb. form) + scientific Latin -ia -ia suffix1. Compare slightly earlier Pentandria n.Linnaeus had earlier used Pentagynia in his unpublished manuscript Hortus Uplandicus (1730).
Botany. Now historical.
In the Linnaean artificial system: an order comprising plants having flowers with five pistils or styles.
