Origin: A borrowing from German. Etymon: German Pentapodie.
Etymology: < German Pentapodie (1834 in the passage translated in quot. 1844) < ancient Greek πεντα- penta- comb. form + ποδ- , πούς foot (see -pod comb. form) + -ία -y suffix3; compare ancient Greek πεντέπους , Hellenistic Greek πεντάπους (adjective) of five feet, five feet long (not recorded in metrical sense). Compare pentameter n., and also monopody n., dipody n., tripody n., etc.
Prosody.
A verse or line consisting of five metrical feet; a sequence of five metrical feet in a verse. Cf. pentameter n.
