Etymology: < classical Latin pessundat-, past participial stem (compare -ate suffix³) of pessundare (pessum dare ) to ruin, destroy < pessum (adverb) to the ground, to the bottom (originally accusative of a supine < an unattested verb ‘to fall’ < the same Indo-European base as foot n. and int.; compare Sanskrit pad- to take a step, fall) + dare to give, put (see datum n.).
