A deposit of very hard rock found among the coal beds; the rock itself.Chiefly associated with Staffordshire.

1817 W. Pitt Topogr. Hist. Staffs. I. 175 No. 30, peldon, contains nodules of hard basaltic, durable stone, too hard to cut, and of no use except for rough walls, or to mend roads, or for pavements.
1829 J. Yates in Trans. Geol. Soc. 2 137 The usual beds belonging to the coal strata, such as clunch and peldon.
1851 W. White Hist., Gaz. & Directory Staffs. (ed. 2) 598 Darlaston, amongst the ironstone are found great quantities of very hard limestones, called peldon, which, after being burnt, are ground down and used as Roman cement.
