Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin Pelecypoda.
Etymology: < scientific Latin Pelecypoda, class name (G. A. Goldfuss Handbuch d. Zool. (1820) I. 599) < ancient Greek πέλεκυς hatchet (see pelecoid n. and adj.) + scientific Latin -poda (see -pod comb. form), in allusion to the shape of the single flattened foot, broadening distally like the blade of a hatchet. Compare French pélécypodes, plural noun (1842).
