Forms: Middle English pelryne, 1900s– pelerin; Scottish pre-1700 pellerin, pre-1700 pilleryn, pre-1700 1800s– pelerin.
Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymon: French pelerin.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman pelerin, pelrin, etc., and Old French, Middle French pelerin, French pèlerin (see pilgrim n.). Compare earlier pilgrim n., and also pelerinage n.Attested in Britain as a surname from the end of the 12th cent., but it is unlikely that such uses should be taken as evidence of currency of the Middle English word.
