Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin peliosis.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin peliosis (F. Swediaur Novum Nosologiæ Methodicæ Systema (1812) II. 173) < ancient Greek πελίωσις extravasation of blood < πελιοῦσθαι to be or become livid ( < πελιός livid, dark bluish grey < an Indo-European base related to that of ancient Greek πελιτνός livid: see pullous adj.) + -σις -sis suffix.

1839 R. Dunglison Med. Lexicon (ed. 2) 772/1 Peliosis, purpura hæmorrhagica.
1850 A. T. Thomson Pract. Treat. Dis. affecting Skin v. 338 Under the term Peliosis, or Purpura rheumatica, Schönlein describes a disease which has been termed by others Roseola rheumatica. In this disease local extravasations occur in the skin, and erythematous patches about the joints, which are swollen and painful.

1967 Science 20 Oct. 377/1 The cystic lesions were of the parenchymal peliosis type and appeared to be the result of focal hepatic necrosis followed by hemorrhage.
1986 Arch. Pathol. & Lab. Med. 110 669/1 Peliosis consists of multiple, irregularly shaped to round or ovoid, blood-filled cystic lesions usually found incidently in the liver at autopsy.
1992 Arch. Internal Med. 152 602 Bacillary peliosis of her liver and spleen, as well as bacillary angiomatosis of liver, spleen, and a lymph node, were found.
2004 Amer. Jrnl. Forensic Med. & Pathol. 25 251 Isolated peliosis of the spleen, characterized by the gross appearance of multiple cystlike, blood-filled cavities on cut surfaces of the organ, is a very rare pathologic entity that has been reported in 33 cases to date.
