Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French peliçon, pelisson.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman and Middle French peliçon, pelison, etc., Middle French, French pelisson, denoting both an overgarment and an undergarment (c1140 in Old French as peliçun) < post-classical Latin pellicion- , pellicio fur coat (12th cent.) < classical Latin pellīcius made of fur (see pelliceous adj.) + (see -oon suffix). Compare post-classical Latin pelizon-, pelizo (1200 in a British source), Old Occitan pelisso (c1150; Occitan pelisson), Catalan pellisó (986 as pelliçone), Spanish pelliçon (1207), Italian pelliccione (1262).
Now historical and rare.
A garment made of, or lined with, fur. Cf. pelisse n. 2.In quot. a14922: fur used to make a cloak.
