Etymology: < post-classical Latin peremption-, peremptio action or effect of killing or destroying (5th cent. in Augustine) < classical Latin perēmpt- , past participial stem of perimere to destroy, kill (see perempt v.) + -iō -ion suffix1. With sense 2 compare Middle French, French peremption (1546 in peremption d'instance), Italian perenzione (1581 in an apparently isolated attestation; subsequently from 1812).
