Origin: A borrowing from Greek. Etymon: Greek πεντηκοστύς.
Etymology: < ancient Greek πεντηκοστύς (plural πεντηκοστύες ) a number or company of fifty < πεντηκοστός fiftieth (see Pentecost n.).The form pentekosty probably represents an inferred singular (which in turn gives rise to the plural form pentekosties).
