Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Pentel.
Etymology: < the name of the Pentel Co. Ltd. (Japanese Penteru Kabushiki-gaisha), Japanese manufacturers of writing equipment.The first product to use the name was Pentel Pas, an oil pastel (1951) < Japanese penteru < pen- (apparently representing a shortening of peintingu < English painting n.) + -teru (in pasteru < English pastel n.2), but after the introduction of Pentel pens this was reinterpreted after pen n.3 and tell v.
A proprietary name for: a type of ballpoint pen typically having a non-metallic tip and a free flow of ink resembling that of a felt-tip pen.
