Origin: A borrowing from Italian. Etymon: Italian pentito.
Etymology: < Italian pentito (1980) use as noun of pentito repentant (11th cent.), past participle of pentirsi to repent (see pentimento n.).
Originally and chiefly in Italy: a person formerly involved in criminal activity (esp. as a member of the Mafia) who collaborates with law-enforcement authorities in return for a lenient sentence or immunity from prosecution; an informer.
