A synthetic sedative-hypnotic and anticonvulsant barbituric drug which is usually used in the form of its sodium salt (more fully pentobarbital sodium, sodium pentobarbital); 5-ethyl-5-(1-methylbutyl)-barbituric acid, C11H18N2O3. Also called pentobarbitone.A proprietary name for the sodium salt is Nembutal. The British approved name was changed from pentobarbitone to pentobarbital in 1998.
