Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin penuārius, penārius.
Etymology: < classical Latin penuārius, variant of penārius used for storing food (see penarious adj.). Compare post-classical Latin penarius, masculine (in an 8th-cent. epitome of a classical Latin grammarian), penarium, neuter (6th cent. in a British source) storehouse, granary. The form penuar is recorded in a number of post-classical Latin inscriptions (6th cent. or earlier), including one from Britain: this may represent a noun penuarium.
Obsolete. rare.
A storehouse. Chiefly figurative.
