Etymology: < post-classical Latin pelliceus of the nature of or resembling a thin membrane or pellicle (1731 in the passage translated in the quot. 1732), transferred use of classical Latin pellīcius , pellīceus made of skins (late 2nd cent. a.d.; < pellis pell n.1 + -īcius : see -itious suffix1) + -ous suffix. N.E.D. (1904) gives the pronunciation as (peli·siəs, -i·ʃiəs) /pɛˈlɪsiːəs/ /-ˈɪʃiːəs/.
Obsolete. rare.
Of the nature of or resembling a thin membrane or pellicle.
