Chemistry.

A toxic crystalline alkaloid obtained from the root of the pellitory, Anacyclus pyrethrum, and some other plants. Cf. pyrethrine n. 2.Pellitorine is an unsaturated secondary amide. Formula: C₁₄H₂₅NO.

1895 W. R. Dunstan & H. Garnett in Jrnl. Chem. Soc. 67 101 We propose provisionally to name it pellitorine. It is very probable that it is the same substance as that isolated..by Buchheim, in 1876, and named by him pyrethrine.

1934 C. C. Steele Introd. Plant Biochem. xiv. 148 Several such substances [sc. acid amides] occur as the pungent principle of certain plants, e.g. pellitorine from Anacyclus pyrethrum.

1967 Martindale's Extra Pharmacopoeia (ed. 25) 1544/2 Pyrethrum root..contains a crystalline substance, pellitorine (pyrethrine) which has an intensely pungent taste and produces a sialagogue effect.
