Etymology: Apparently < a variant of Middle French, French peluche plush n.1; compare French †pelusse (1611 in Cotgrave). Compare Spanish pelusa down on fruit, nap on cloth, velvet (1560 or earlier), Catalan pelussa down on fruit (19th cent.), Italian peluzzo, peluccio fine hair, soft down (14th cent.), plush (a1566), post-classical Latin pellutium short fine wool (a1432 in a source from Parma).
Obsolete. rare.
