Etymology: < Spanish pelotari (1894 or earlier; alteration (after pelota pelota n.) of Basque pilotari ) and its etymon Basque pilotari < pilota + -ari (ultimately < classical Latin -ārius -er suffix1). Compare French pelotari (1893), Catalan pilotari (1916).
A pelota player, esp. one who plays professionally.
