Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin pericardium, pericardion.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin pericardium, pericardion the membrane round the heart (late 4th cent.) < Hellenistic Greek περικάρδιον (Galen), use as noun of neuter of ancient Greek περικάρδιος , adjective < περι- peri- prefix + καρδία heart (see cardia n.). Compare Italian pericardio (1598; earlier as pericordeum (a1493)), Portuguese pericardia (16th cent.; now pericardio ). Compare pericard n.
Anatomy and Zoology.
The membranous sac, consisting of an outer fibrous and an inner serous layer, which encloses the mammalian heart and the beginning of the major blood vessels. Also: the cavity or sinus enclosing or constituting the heart or corresponding organ in certain invertebrates.
