Origin: Of multiple origins. Partly a borrowing from Latin. Partly formed within English, by clipping or shortening. Etymons: Latin pericarpium ; pericarpium n.2
Etymology: Originally < post-classical Latin pericarpium pericarpium n.2; compare -carp comb. form (compare quot. 1759 at sense 1); in later use partly also shortened < pericarpium n.2 Compare French péricarpe (1556), Italian pericarpo (a1729, also as pericarpio (1813)).
Botany.
1. A structure containing the seeds of a flowering plant; a seed-vessel or fruit; (now) spec. the wall of the ripened ovary of a plant. Cf. endocarp n., epicarp n., mesocarp n.
