Etymology: < pelti- comb. form + -form comb. form2. With sense 2 compare French peltiforme (A. P. de Candolle Théorie Élémentaire de la Botanique (1813) 337; 1868 in Littré in sense 1).R. G. Mayne (see quot. 1857 at sense 1) gives a Latin form peltiformis.

1. Having the form of a pelta (in various senses); esp. flattened, typically discoid, and attached at or near the centre.
