Etymology: In α. forms < Italian regional piperno, in β. forms < Italian peperino, piperino (a1537 as peperigno , 1550 as piperigno ), both < post-classical Latin piperinus (a636 in Isidore) < classical Latin piper pepper (see pepper n.) + -īnus -ine suffix¹, so called from its consisting of small grains.

Geology.

A pyroclastic deposit formed of sand, cinders, etc., cemented together; spec. a light, porous, grey tuff containing fragments of leucite, etc., found in the Albano hills, Italy.
