Origin: A borrowing from Spanish. Etymon: Spanish pepino.
Etymology: < Spanish pepino (1380–5 in sense ‘cucumber’, 1752 in a text from Puerto Rico in sense 2) < pepón melon (although this is first attested later: mid 16th cent. or earlier; < classical Latin pepōn- , pepō pepon n.) + Spanish -ino -ine suffix4, pepón being interpreted as an augmentative form (compare -oon suffix).
1. The small, elongated melon-like fruit of the tropical shrub Solanum muricatum (family Solanaceae), having a yellow skin with purplish patches and yellow flesh; the plant itself, which is native to south and central America but widely cultivated elsewhere for this fruit.
