Forms: Middle English penauncer, Middle English penauncere, Middle English penaunscer, Middle English 1600s 1800s penancer.
Origin: Formed within English, by derivation; modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: penance n., -er suffix1.
Etymology: < penance n. + -er suffix1, after Old French peneancier, Old French, Middle French penancier priest who assigns penance (c1180), penitent (c1196) < post-classical Latin poenitentiarius (see penitentiary n.1).The forms in Middle English suggest an Anglo-Norman etymon in -er -er suffix2, but this is apparently unattested.
