Etymology: < perfection v. + -ate suffix3, after Middle French perfectionner (1454 in past participle, French perfectionner ). Compare Catalan perfeccionar (1620; perhaps < Spanish), Spanish perfeccionar (first half of the 16th cent.), Italian perfezionare (1553). Compare earlier perfect v.
Now rare.
