Etymology: < peridin- (in scientific Latin Peridinium (see peridinian n. and adj.)) + -in suffix1, after German Peridinin (compare quot. 1893).With the form peridinine compare -ine suffix5.
Biology.
A carotenoid pigment found in dinoflagellates, where it forms part of a photosynthetic light-harvesting protein complex (together with a small proportion of chlorophyll).

1893 J. E. Humphrey tr. A. Zimmermann Bot. Microtechnique 105 The Peridiniæ..are distinguished..by the possession of true chromatophores. These contain, according to Schütt, three pigments, which he calls Peridine-chlorophyllin [= chlorophyll], peridinin, and phycopyrrin.
1944 Sci. Monthly Nov. 396/2 Sulcatoxanthin, or peridinin, occurring both in some of the microscopic algae and in certain sea-anemones, is another xanthophyll found prominently in sediments.
1982 M. J. Dring Biol. Marine Plants iii. 47 The fucoxanthin: chlorophyll a ratio is 0.3–0.4 in brown algae and 0.5–0.6 in diatoms and, in dinoflagellates, peridinin occurs in much the same abundance relative to chlorophyll a.
1996 Science 21 June 1743/2 The peridinin and chlorophyll molecules are tightly packed within a vessel formed by the protein, an arrangement that allows for swift transfer of energy from the carotenoid, which captures the light, to the chlorophyll.
