Origin: A borrowing from French. Etymons: French pencel, penoncel.
Etymology: < Anglo-Norman pencel (c1200), reduced form of penoncel pennoncel n. Compare post-classical Latin pencellus , penecellus , penesellus (from 13th cent. in British sources), penocellus (from 13th cent. in British sources; 14th cent. in continental sources), penicellus (from 14th cent. in British sources). Compare Middle Dutch pinceel , pinseel . Compare later pennoncel n.The form pensil may have been reinforced by association with the unrelated pensile adj. The β. forms are probably by association with pennon n.
Now rare (archaic and historical in later use).
