单词 pendace
释义

pendacen.

Forms: 1500s pentice, 1500s–1600s pendice; Scottish pre-1700 pandace, pre-1700 pendace, pre-1700 pendas, pre-1700 pendasse, pre-1700 pendeis, pre-1700 pendes, pre-1700 pendesse, pre-1700 pendis, pre-1700 1700s–1800s pendice.
Origin: Of multiple origins. Apparently either (i) a borrowing from French; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Or (ii) a borrowing from Latin; perhaps modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: French pendre; Latin pendēre.
Etymology: Apparently < Middle French pendre or its etymon classical Latin pendēre to hang (see pend v.3), with the second element perhaps after French -ace, suffix forming adjectives (compare -acious suffix). Compare Old French pendace hanging pap (undated, in an apparently isolated attestation), pendiz (adjective) hanging (13th cent.).The word is perhaps attested earlier in the following quot. 1464-5, although it is uncertain whether this is to be interpreted as showing the Scots word or an otherwise unattested French equivalent or etymon:1464–5 in C. Innes Registrum Episcopatus Aberdonensis (1845) II. 165 In le tak in parte dextra [of the mitre] vij vchis et le pendace.
Chiefly Scottish. Obsolete.
A loose hanging part of something, esp. of an ornamental nature; = pendant n. 3.
