Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymons: Latin pendente, pendēns, līte, līs.
Etymology: < classical Latin pendente, ablative of pendēns hanging, pendent (see pendent adj.) + līte, ablative of līs lawsuit (see lis n.3); literally ‘with the lawsuit pending’. Compare post-classical Latin pendentia litis period during which a suit is pending (c1440, 1684 in British sources).
