1. Any of several trees or shrubs with pungent fruits; esp. (a) (in full red pepper tree) a bushy capsicum, probably a variety of Capsicum annuum; (b) (more fully Jamaica pepper tree) the pimento or allspice tree, Pimenta dioica (rare); (c) Australian = mountain pepper n. 3. Obsolete.

(More fully California pepper tree) an evergreen tree of the Peruvian Andes, Schinus molle (family Anacardiaceae), with gracefully drooping branches, fernlike aromatic foliage, and pungent rose-red berries, frequently planted for ornament or shade in warm climates (also called peppercorn tree, Peruvian mastic). Also (more fully Brazilian pepper tree): the related S. terebinthifolius of Brazil and Paraguay, with scarlet berries and branches that do not droop (also called Christmas-berry tree).
