Etymology: < French périphraser (1551 in Middle French) < périphrase periphrase n. In later use probably directly < periphrase n. N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (pe·rifrēiz) /ˈpɛrɪfreɪz/.
Obsolete. rare.
