单词 phenakistoscope
释义

phenakistoscopen.

Brit. /ˌfiːnəˈkɪstəskəʊp/, /ˌfɛnəˈkɪstəskəʊp/, U.S. /ˌfinəˈkɪstəˌskoʊp/, /ˌfɛnəˈkɪstəˌskoʊp/
Forms: 1800s– phenakistoscope, 1900s– phenakistascope, 1900s– phenakistiscope.
Origin: A borrowing from Greek, combined with English elements; apparently modelled on a French lexical item. Etymons: Greek ϕενακιστής , -o- connective, -scope comb. form.
Etymology: < Hellenistic Greek ϕενακιστής cheat, impostor ( < ancient Greek ϕενακίζειν to cheat, trick ( < ϕένακ- , ϕέναξ cheat (see phenakite n.) + -ίζειν -ize suffix) + -τής, suffix forming agent nouns) + -o- connective + -scope comb. form, apparently after French phénakisticope (J. A. F. Plateau 1833, in Annales de chim. et de phys. 53 304; 1842 as phénakistiscope).
A toy consisting of a disc or drum with figures representing a moving object in successive positions arranged radially on it, to be viewed in such a way (e.g., through a fixed slit) that the persistence of the successive visual images produces the impression of actual motion when the disc or drum is rapidly rotated.
