单词 penelope
释义

Penelopen.

Brit. /pᵻˈnɛləpi/, U.S. /pəˈnɛləpi/
Forms: 1500s Penelopee, 1500s– Penelope.
Origin: From a proper name. Etymon: proper name Penelope.
Etymology: < the name of Penelope (classical Latin Pēnelopē , ancient Greek Πηνελόπη (Herodotus), in Homer's Odyssey Πηνελόπεια ; compare Penelopey in quot. 1557 at sense 1), the wife of Odysseus (Ulysses) in ancient Greek mythology.During her husband's long absence, Penelope unravelled every night the web she had woven during the day, and thus put off the suitors whose offers she had promised to entertain when the web should be finished. The name probably derives < ancient Greek πηνέλοψ , which designated a species of wild duck with colourful markings on its neck. Quot. 1605 at sense 2a alludes to this etymology (already current in antiquity), which may also have suggested the later scientific use as an ornithological term (see sense 2b). Compare earlier scientific Latin penelope common widgeon (1678 or earlier).
