Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin penetrālia.
Etymology: < classical Latin penetrālia innermost part of a building, innermost or secret parts, plural of penetrāle (see penetral n.). Compare earlier penetral n. Compare also later penetralium n.
The innermost parts or recesses of a building; spec. the sanctuary or inner sanctum of a temple. Also figurative: secret parts, mysteries, etc.
