Brit. /ˈpɛnᵻtrətɪv/, U.S. /ˈpɛnəˌtreɪdɪv/, /ˈpɛnətrədɪv/
Forms: late Middle English penetractiue (irregular), late Middle English penetratif, late Middle English penetratife, late Middle English penetratyfe, late Middle English penetratyue, late Middle English penetrife (probably transmission error), late Middle English–1600s penetratiue, 1600s– penetrative; Scottish pre-1700 penetratif, pre-1700 penetratife, pre-1700 penetratyf, pre-1700 penetratyve, pre-1700 penitratyve, pre-1700 penytratyve, pre-1700 1700s 1900s– penetrative.
Origin: A borrowing from Latin. Etymon: Latin penetrativus.
Etymology: < post-classical Latin penetrativus penetrating (frequently from c1170 in British sources; mid 13th cent. in a continental source), having or showing insight, discerning (13th cent., a1384 in British sources) < classical Latin penetrāt- , past participial stem of penetrāre penetrate v. + -īvus -ive suffix. Compare French pénétratif (13th cent. in Old French as penitratis ), Old Occitan penetratiu (c1350), Catalan penetratiu (1696), Spanish penetrativo (a1440 or earlier), Portuguese penetrativo (15th cent. as penetratyvo ), Italian penetrativo (c1350). Compare earlier penetrable adj.The late Middle English form penetrife is probably a transmission error but could perhaps alternatively be interpreted as showing an earlier attestation of penetrive adj.
