Etymology: < pepper n. + wort n.1 Compare Middle Dutch peperwort horseradish, early modern Dutch pepercruyt dittander (1543 or earlier: compare quots. 1562 at sense 1a, 1633 at sense 1a; in Middle Dutch as pepercruut in uncertain sense, perhaps ‘horseradish’; Dutch peperkruid, denoting dittander and various other herbs), Middle Low German pēperkrūt, Middle High German pfefferkrūt (German Pfefferkraut) savory, dittany, dittander. Perhaps compare also classical Latin piperītis (in Pliny), denoting a plant of uncertain identity.With sense 2 compare earlier peppergrass n. 4.

Originally: dittander, Lepidium latifolium, a plant of the family Brassicaceae ( Cruciferae) formerly gathered and sometimes cultivated for its pungent leaves and root (later more fully broad-leaved pepperwort). In later use (chiefly with distinguishing word): any of various small plants constituting the genus Lepidium, which have dense racemes of small white-petalled (or sometimes apetalous) flowers and a hot pungent taste; esp. (more fully field pepperwort) L. campestre, a Eurasian plant of arable fields and banks.In quot. a1500 perhaps: dittany of Crete, Origanum dictamnus.
