Etymology: < post-classical Latin Pepuziani (plural) members of a sect of Montanists (5th cent. in Augustine) < Pepuza (Byzantine Greek Πέπουζα ) Pepuza, a city in Phrygia + -iānī , plural of -iānus -ian suffix. Compare Byzantine Greek Πεπουζιανοί, plural (4th cent.). N.E.D. (1905) gives the pronunciation as (pĭpiū·ziăn) /pɪˈpjuːzɪən/.
